Our herd
Eighty cows, each with a name, on grass for most of the year
Good milk starts with a comfortable, well-fed cow.
How the herd is kept
- On pasture from spring to autumn, moved between paddocks
- Our own hay through the winter, in an open airy barn
- Milked twice a day in a parlor built for the cows' comfort
- Every cow's health and yield recorded daily
- Calves raised on the farm
THE YEAR
What the herd does through the seasons
Spring
Turnout
The herd goes out to grass. Spring milk is rich and the butter turns yellow.
Summer
Grazing
Paddocks are grazed in rotation. The cheese made now ages best.
Autumn
Last grass and hay
The final grazing, then hay cut earlier in the year comes out.
Winter
In the barn
Open, airy and dry, with the herd fed on our own hay until spring.
